On Oct 20, 2010, Nick Didkovsky and
Chuck O'Meara
(that's us) bought a $100 electric guitar from Elderly Instruments.
We did not know what it sounded like or if it even worked, but we were charmed by its no-name vibe and single bridge
pickup that looks like an old radio.
A bunch of our guitar playing friends were instantly charmed, too, including (take your time reading this, it's an awesome list): David Starobin, Keith Rowe, Andy Aledort, Elliot Sharp, Rhys Chatham, Alex Skolnick, Barry Cleveland, Mike Keneally, Fred Frith, Henry Kaiser, Manuel Göttsching (Ash Ra Tempel), Ava Mendoza, Janet Feder, Mat Eiland, Biota, Ernesto Lucar, Han-earl Park, Hillary Fielding, John Shiurba, Karl Evangelista, Phil Burk, Ray Kallas, Thomas Dimuzio, Jeff Tweedy, Julia Miller, Nels Cline, Chris Murphy, Chuck O'Meara, Marty Carlson, Shawn Persinger, Kai Niggeman, Steve MacLean, Michael Bierylo, Ken Field, Bill Brovold, Larry Polansky, Amy Denio, Bruce Eisenbeil, Caroline Feldmeier, Colin Marston, David Linaberg, Hans Tammen, James Moore, Jesse Krakow, Jesse Kranzler, Jon Diaz, Josh Lopes, Kobe Van Cauwenberghe, Marco Cappelli, Marco Oppedissano, Mark Hitt, Mark Solomon, Mark Stewart, Mike Lerner , Nick Didkovsky, Ron Anderson, Taylor Levine, Tom Marsan, Greg Anderson, Del Rey, Teisco Del Rey / Dan Forte, Matt Wilson, JayDeeSG, Alex Lackner, Dan Gapen, Toon Callier, and Juan Parra. The $100 Guitar is now passing through the hands of 68 players, each of which will record a piece with it (anywhere from a few seconds to 3 minutes long), and then pass it on to the next player. When we've got enough pieces we'll release a CD (maybe self release or maybe some label, too early to tell). The enthusiasm is kind of staggering; we started this idea and 48 hours later we were overwhelmed by the positive response. This will have to be a double CD.
